Well. It’s come to this, the last day of freshman year at Hendrix College. And what a year it has been too, between the activities, classes, work, and general fun I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of. So without further ado, here’s a quick recap of the year:
The Activities
I’ve not shied away from keeping busy here at Hendrix in the various student organizations. Between being active in Students Advocating for Gender Equality (Hendrix’s Student Organization of the Year, by the way) and the United Methodist Youth Fellowship Scholars program (and the associated Religious Life programming such as Chapel and Communion), I’ve had no shortage of fun events to attend and people to meet. And next year, I’m upping the ante by joining the KHDX team as Technical Director, which means you’ll be hearing me on the air soon (if you live next to Hendrix basically, that is).
The Classes
I’ve had no shortage of class work here either. However, I can safely say that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every class that I’ve been in, from classes in my declared major and minor (Computer Science and Film Studies, respectively) to classes that just interest me in general. Next year, I’ll also be taking some creative writing, economics, and anthropology courses to broaden my horizons, as well as staying well on track in the CS and Film Studies departments.
The Work
At the end of September, I had the opportunity to join the Hendrix College Technology Services team as a “HelpDesk and Media Center Assistant” and I can safely say that it’s one of the most enjoyable positions I’ve ever held. It’s given me the opportunity to not only work with a wide variety of people and groups on campus in ensuring that their technology and events are running smoothly (from students to the Dean, and SAGE to Hewlett Packard Enterprise), but also work behind-the-scenes to bring new and exciting capabilities to campus (some of which are still works in progress!) This job has also opened doors for me in the future…
The Future
…as starting this May, I’ll be working as an intern for the Arkansas Conference of the United Methodist Church in their Center for Technology, a job that I am very, VERY excited about. This internship will allow me to experience what it’s like to work in technology with a non-profit, something that I have thought about pursuing as (part of) a career path moving forward. In addition, I’m continuing to do freelance work for churches in the local area (which this time means Conway) and that also has me excited to help them get a solid online presence up and going.
So there you have it! My freshman year at Hendrix has been quite the busy one, but I can safely say that I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I almost hate that the year is over (almost being the key work, my internship has me that excited for the summer), but come next August, I’ll be ready to hit the ground running once again here at Hendrix College.
